Working a Hotel Season in the French Alps: What to Expect

25 October 20265 min read

A hotel season in the French Alps can involve resort hotel, residence or chalet work, but the setting does not determine your contract, duties or benefits. Read the employer’s offer for the actual role, property, season dates, hours, accommodation, languages and application requirements. Ask for missing details before booking travel.

Resort work differs by property and job

A resort may serve guests who arrive for fixed holiday periods and have busy service peaks. The exact workload depends on the property and role. A cook may prepare meals and manage stock; a receptionist may handle arrivals and requests; housekeeping prepares rooms and reports maintenance issues. Use the advert’s responsibilities and ask what a normal shift looks like, how rota changes are handled, and who supervises the role.

Do not assume every seasonal job includes accommodation. Check whether it is guaranteed, whether it is on site, what it costs and when you may move in. Ask about room sharing, utilities, meals, transport for early or late shifts and what happens if your employment ends sooner than expected.

Two employer examples checked on 13 October 2026

Sunweb’s official Cook advert for winter 2026–27 lists work across named resorts in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, a 39-hour full-time contract, accommodation and meals at the workplace, and a cooking certificate or proven similar kitchen experience. It asks for French and/or English and says Dutch is a plus. The page also displays a salary range; before comparing it, ask the employer to clarify the gross/net basis and exact pay period. These terms belong to this specific cook vacancy. Sunweb official vacancy

Accor’s Refuge de Solaise page describes a winter fixed-term reception-manager position in Val-d’Isère with a November 2026 start. It describes management of reception and bell staff. This senior role illustrates that “French Alps hotel work” includes experienced leadership vacancies as well as seasonal operational roles. Translate the advert into questions

Offer detail What to confirm
Season or contract label Exact start/end dates and whether dates can change
Hours per week Guaranteed hours, shift pattern, breaks and overtime process
Salary or range Gross/net, pay period, applicable classification and payroll date
Accommodation Guaranteed place, cost, occupancy, location and deposit
Meals Which meals, on which shifts, and whether any charge applies
Language Required level and languages used with guests and coworkers
Work location Assigned property, transport and whether multiple sites are involved

French can be required for guest interactions, kitchen coordination or local procedures, but it is not safe to assume the same standard for every job. Read the exact advert. Ask whether English is accepted for the core duties and which language is used in briefings and safety instructions. Do not present “English-speaking” as evidence that no French is needed.

Documents, work permission and written terms

Prepare a role-specific CV, a short note about your availability and examples that match the tasks. A kitchen applicant can describe a section, service type or food-safety training they actually know. A front-office applicant can show booking, payment or guest-service experience. If your experience is transferable rather than hotel-based, explain what you did and avoid claiming hotel systems you have not used.

Check the relevant French work-permission rules for your citizenship and situation. A job offer does not itself grant permission to work. Confirm the application route is controlled by the employer, and read the written terms before committing to relocation. EU guidance can orient EU citizens working across member states; other statuses and destinations need specific official checks. Your Europe work permits

Take the Sunweb cook vacancy as a concrete reading exercise. The employer page names resort locations, states 39 hours a week, lists accommodation and meals, and asks for a certificate or proven kitchen experience. Before deciding whether it suits you, add the information it does not settle: the exact assigned property, work dates, gross or net pay basis, staff-room charge, room occupancy, meal schedule and transport. The advert’s listed range is a starting point for questions, not enough by itself to compare take-home pay.

Now compare that with the Accor Refuge de Solaise reception-manager vacancy. Its leadership duties and November start describe a different experience level and team responsibility. A candidate considering both should not treat them as interchangeable French Alps jobs. Identify which duties you have performed, which skills you can evidence and what training the employer expects.

This method is useful even when the vacancy closes: keep the role distinction and questions, then apply them to a current offer. Recheck every live example near publication and make clear when a cited page is illustrative rather than an open vacancy.

Before departure, keep copies of the offer, accommodation details, arrival instructions and a contact for urgent questions. Ask how you will reach the property and whether the room is available before your first shift. Browse current hospitality vacancies; applications from Ergazo vacancy pages go directly to the employer.
